So we were in class and we just had a lunch break. You know, to eat? Anyway, this one student (and by the way, most of my class knows about this because I just can’t handle my reactions sometimes, giving dirty looks..) decides to eat something crunchy af and the teacher doesn’t even say anything. I look at him with like “tf is you serious??” And you know what they do? Yeahhh start munching harder and laughing.
I got up, went somewhere else, cried for half an hour and said to the teacher that I wasn’t feeling well and went home. Because I was wayy too anxious that in the following lessons, they would do the same. And I do not have the mental capacity to handle that. I’m so sad, I’m still tearing up as I write this. Why can’t people be more considerate? Why can’t they put themselves in other peoples shoes? I know this isn’t well known and I understand if you don’t get it, but why fuel it? I just created this new account to post this here. because I am worried we aren't using our current (and waning) strengths correctly here.
Today is Oct 15th (for some of you reading this, it's now Oct 16th). There has been calls for a general strike almost this whole year so far, with each attempt not getting the attention it needs to succeed, nor is it uniform in its demands. Many users here have pointed out the "general strike" poster pictures with non-uniform demands, so the message is muddled and the cause has 0 strength. BOTH of these issues are WHY you will not get a general strike to work until there is an ACTUAL organization around reframing our idea of work here in the US and hopefully abroad as well. I'm a nobody on this sub, especially because again, I just made this account specifically to speak up about this, and because it's not going to happen without conversation and a consensus of values. I also want to bring attention to this now because Black Friday/Week is coming up and that is the SINGLE BEST CHANCE we have at making businesses and entities hurt the way they always make us hurt.
Some of you reading this might think this is a pipedream. Have you ever read stories about high schools walking out to protest something? Workers getting up and leaving due to toxic work culture? It's pretty simple really. Get roughly 80% of your crews to join you in a walkout demanding better treatment and raises. The shit tier end of the businesses in the US alone are feeling this heat, with the best example being food service industry. Restaurant workers, fed up with anti-masker temper tantrums, foul treatment from staff, co-workers, and customers, and just generally shitty business practices have made the decision that if they are going to be broke and miserable, they will instead be FREE and miserable while searching for more redeeming quality work. Restaurants are an overabundance in general, and somehow they have the legal "okay" to treat their staffs like shit, then have the sheer audacity to complain that "people don't want to work anymore," or "Biden's handouts (which started early 2020 under Trump) made people entitled.” Why are they entitled to treat their employees like shit and then turn around and cry foul because they ran their businesses poorly? This is just a single industry example, but it’s one clearly many of you here feel like you've experienced in one way, shape or form over the years. I’ve felt it in janitorial, administration, IT, and so on. I know I’m not the only one.
Right now we have momentum and not much else. There are some well-deserved strikes taking place with Kellogs workers, John Deere workers, the crews of Film and Television is coming to one, and there are bound to be more. We CAN'T miss this opportunity. But it desperately needs organization to succeed. Not drum circles, not live-ins, not anything like that. GUIDED organization is the only REAL solution, where what money is received to help that organization run is thoroughly documented and available for every person interested to see how it is spent and for their majority voice to say how they need it spent. And there needs to be 3 clear demands that must be met for the movement to relax – All of the following is NON-NEGOTIABLE:

  1. Fundamental pay and benefits changes: Minimum wage must be immediately hiked to $20 AND tied to inflation rates AND Universal Health Care as a RIGHT for everyone WITHOUT being tied to employment. The fight for $15 sure was something when that $15/hr mattered… but even by 2016, that was too little too late. We are now at a stage where no single person on minimum wage can AFFORD RENT IN ANY OF THE 50 STATES. Now that businesses are hurting due to their shitty practices, they have decided they DO have it in them to pay better… and yet it’s STILL TOO LOW. To top that off, many places keep people in situations where they don’t get enough hours to qualify for healthcare, and if you do, it’s a hit-or-miss package on if it actually covers what you need, and takes a significant chunk out of your direct pay. (Speaking from experience here since I now have arthritis in my feet. I’m 32.) And a business shall also be fined 30% of their gross annual profits and pay damages to the affected employees if they even have the balls to try and stop us from staying home when we’re sick or using our benefits.
  2. Workers must be given the fundamental freedom to choose to unionize and for those unions to be open-facing/transparent in their economic day-to-day functions. Unions are NOT perfect, and many will try to cry foul when unions come together. However, we have gone in such a reversal of direction regarding unions that the inability for us to negotiate for better pay/treatment/work-life balance has wrecked the idea of working to live. I don’t know about you, but the idea that my golden years post- retirement are when I’m supposed to travel and enjoy life seems like nothing more than a false dream, specifically when we’re burdened with pain that we hope to have insurance to deal with, and long stretches where we can’t even take off for holidays or vacation of our own choosing “because it’s a busy time” (something they can choose to say at any point). We should be able to experience those things now when we’re younger and capable. We shouldn’t be living out our best years busting ass for a return we will never see a dime of (Also how many of you read the word “retirement” and thought “not in my lifetime?”) If any employer attempts to stop unionization or intimidate employees, or mess in the day to day ops of a union, they will be fined 30% of their gross annual profits and pay damages to the affected employees.
  3. It is time for us to move to the 4-day 8 hour work week with no reduced pay or benefits. Study after study and test after test shows better worker productivity when given that extra day, and keeping the same pay in that time frame will go a long way to keeping our mental spirits high when engaging with any of this work. No 4-10’s, no 4 days with reduced pay and reduced benefits. The 5-day work week standard was put in place by unions of the past because it was hit or miss what you could have with any given employer. It is time we do the same here. Also, with automation making its excessive creep into every one of our lives, this will become absolutely crucial for us in determining our roles in labor as we move forward in life. The final point for this is that it WILL be 8 hours and not an hour more. I loathe jobs that say they are 8 hours, yet make you clock out an hour for lunch. That makes it 9 hours, not including commutes. IF I AM ON THE PROPERTY FOR WORK, I WILL BE PAID FOR THE DURATION I AM THERE. If they attempt to cut pay or pull that hour off for lunch/breaks, they will be, you guessed it, fined 30% of their gross annual profits and pay damages to affected employees.
These three points are fundamental in getting control of our work lives back from the greed and unsustainability of bad employers. These work to address wage theft, time theft, and benefit use theft, they work to give everyone a chance to accrue wealth and savings and to move forward safely in their lives, and to empower us to live our lives more the way we want to. We need to do this to tell businesses that without us, they make absolutely no money. THEY NEED US, and yet we are continually treated like disposable automatons meanwhile their share prices soar, people who don’t work for them get payouts from shares and stocks, and CEO’s are making 250x what their base employees make. None of this is acceptable because none of this can be sustained.
If you’re reading this and think this sounds too good to be true, fine. What’s your plan, do you even have one? Maybe you do but you can’t be bothered to put it out here to be actionable. That’s the apathetic shit that got us here in the first place. We aren’t discussing plans here and THAT IS THE PROBLEM. Apathy will only continue to make this worse. If you think “Why don’t you start it then?” What do you think I’m trying to do here? I don’t know how to start any organization, but put me in with a group of like-minded people and with varying skill sets and I bet we could organize for the betterment of us all.
For a name, I like “The National Employee Rights Association” but the problem is that there is already something with the acronym for NERA. We can come back to that.
BUT WE NEED TO STRIKE THE WEEK OF BLACK FRIDAY. THAT IS THE FIRST GOAL, AND WE ARE ALREADY JUST OVER A MONTH AWAY. We can make this actionable, but we need to spread it. These are the only three goals we need to discuss. We can work on the rest later, but having a unified vision with these clearly defined end-goals is the only chance of getting this to move forward and succeed. We cannot argue over semantics and minor BS. IT NEEDS TO BE UNIFIED HERE. If we can’t unify under these ideas, then we don’t have hope to make a change.
Please, let’s make this one work, for the sake of our futures and those that will come after us.
